Traveling with a toddler can be an adventure, but with the right preparation, It can be a smooth and enjoyable experience for everyone. Here are some essential hacks that worked for me when travelling with my toddler, broken down by category.
Preparation & Packing
- The “New Toy” Trick: Pack a few small, inexpensive, and brand new toys or books your toddler hasn’t seen before. Introduce them only when you need a distraction (like for take off or landing on the plane or a long stretch in the car).
- Layered Clothing: Dress your toddler in layers.Planes, trains, and even cars can have fluctuating temperatures, and easy access to an extra layer or a quick change is vital.
- The “Must-Have” Carry-on: Keep a dedicated diaper bag or small backpack for the airplane/car trip that includes:
- Three times as many diapers/wipes as you think you’ll need (Trust me I’ve had a vomit disaster on the plane).
- A full change of clothes for both the child and you (Trust me again, you’ll want it when you’ve got 5 hours left on your flight and your covered in vomit).
- A plastic bag for spoiled clothes or trash.
- A small first-aid kit with child-safe pain relief (They might stop you at security to inspect it, but baby Panadol is allowed).

In-Transit Strategy
- Snack Strategy: Bring more snacks than you expect to eat. Focus on “long-play” snacks – things that take a while to eat, like pouches, blueberries, or crackers they have to pick up individually. Avoid excessive sugar to prevent a mid-journey crash.
- Burn Energy Before: If you’re traveling by plane or have plans for a long road trip, burn some energy off before boarding or starting your trip. Play a quick game, go for a walk, or explore an open space. A little movement before a long trip can help making sitting still for longer periods much easier.
- Stroller or Carrier? In my personal travels all I’ve every used is a carrier. Whether walking through an airport or going sight seeing, this has been a life saver, especially if your toddler is a “Velcro” baby. This keeps them calm and keeps your hands free for baggage.

- Pre-Download Everything: Don’t rely on airport of hotel Wi-Fi. Download their favourite shows, movies, or interactive games on your tablet or phone before you leave the house.
Destination Success
- Forget the Home Routine: While schedules work at home, they can be a source of stress on the road. Embrace the “holiday rhythm” If naps happen in the car, a stroller, or on your carrier when your out sight seeing, Take it! Being flexible with sleep and meal times will make the trip significantly more enjoyable for everyone.
- Embrace the Unexpected: Sometimes, “ice cream for lunch” is the best way to reset a mood, and a tantrums are a natural part of the travel experience. Acknowledge them, breathe and remember you are in a new environment together.
- Prioritise Movement Breaks: To help your toddler burn off energy, scout our local parks, aquariums, or playgrounds in advance. Build “movement breaks” (especially if your day consists of a bit of time in a stroller or Carrier) into your itinerary so your little one can explore and stretch their legs after being contained during transit.

- Explore New Flavours: Don’t worry about sticking to a strict meal. Let your toddler try different foods and experience the local culture – even if that means the diet is a little different at home.
- Child-Proofing Checklist: Toddlers are naturally curious. Whenever staying at a new place take a quick look upon entry to find a potential hazards for your little one. Find my Child-Proof Checklist below to save for your Travel adventures.

- Go With The Flow: Traveling with a toddler rarely goes exactly to plan. And that’s okay. Some of the best family memories come from unexpected detours, longer snack breaks, slowing down when little legs get tired. Instead of trying to stick with the perfect itinerary, leave room for flexibility, embrace chaos the chaos and go with the flow. A relaxed attitude can turn travel hiccups into part of the adventure.
The “Golden Rule”
Lower your expectations. Things might not go perfectly, and that is okay. If the plan falls apart because of a tantrum or a missed nap, pivot, take a breath, and focus on the fact you are making memories together.
Final thoughts
Some of my favorite memories have been made traveling with my Toddler. Sure, there has been meltdowns, missed naps, and movement that didn’t go to plan, but there has also been so many laughs, discoveries and special moments I wouldn’t trade for anything.
Traveling with a toddler isn’t always easy, but it’s always worth it. Slow down, embrace the unexpected, and focus on the memories you’re making together. The destination will be wonderful, but it’s the little moments along the way that matter the most.
